The A16-NER3 is worse. NER3 tells you it's a top-clamp style with a specific insert screw size. But A16? That's the shank size—16mm. What most people don't realize is that Kennametal sometimes uses legacy codes. The same physical tool could have an older catalog number and a newer one that doesn't cross-reference directly.
At least, that's been my experience with their boring bar line. The milling tools might be cleaner.

You see a price for a Kennametal insert with the KC5010 coating. Looks good. But is that the right grade for your application? I once bought 200 of them for a steel turning job, only to find out KC5010 was optimized for cast iron. The inserts chipped within 20 parts. (Ugh.)

- Ignoring insert quantity. A box of 10 inserts at $15 each seems straightforward. But sometimes the quote is per insert, sometimes per pack. Read the fine print.
- Not asking about obsolescence. Kennametal updates their product lines periodically. The A16-NER3 might be replaced by a newer geometry next year. If the current quote is 40% off, ask why. It might be end-of-life stock.
